happy 6th birthday dylan…
Posted: February 27, 2011 Filed under: business., party. 1 Comment »this is the first party cake post!
people often ask me to match their confections to party supplies like plates, napkins, invitations etc. it can get a little tricky sometimes… i like to make sure that in the end the cake pulls together the theme of the party but that it also reflects the style, whimsiness, & well, “look” that is the looking glass… bakery. so, this is how it turned out. {& this one hit my “favorites” list… i love the way the blue & red came together with those cute checkered flags…} HAPPY 6TH BIRTHDAY DYLAN!

the oak street mill…
Posted: February 26, 2011 Filed under: antiques & trinkets., personal. Leave a comment »the old cotton mill built in 1922 now holds 10,000 square feet of goodness. i could walk up & down the original wooden floors for hours… & i often do, thinking about what times were like almost 90 years ago. i’ve caught myself just staring at the floors & forgetting the task at hand! it’s a treasure hunt but you’re sure to find something you can’t leave without. there are a few great antique spots around town and i’ll be sure to share them all but for now, here are two of my all time favorite pieces, both were found at the mill…
{the first is a 12 pane antique window… it was actually torn out of an old building on trade street uptown, which makes it even more special. it’s really difficult to find windows this size with the glass still intact… it’s hangs in our dark purple dining room. i’m still on the hunt for weathered shutters to hang on both sides, but i love it!}
{the 2nd is this old door… i had been on the search for one for quite a while when i found it buried behind a pile of things. it’s the perfect shade of washed out blue & still has the iron door hardware. it’s in our living room & i love that it creates “a secret place” hiding somewhere behind it.}
it’s saturday and i’m headed up there for a visit right now! hope i find something fun to show you… happy hunting.

how to: copper pipe necklace…
Posted: February 24, 2011 Filed under: how to. Leave a comment »i’ve seen something similar to this before but wanted to try my own version… & i thought that a fun, simple project would be perfect for my first official post. rose gold is everywhere & it’s an easy change out of your ordinary gold & silver. it’s quite simply a blend of yellow gold & copper {which is why i went with copper pieces none the less.} this project requires no sewing, costs less than $20 & should take less than an hour.
what you’ll need: copper coupling {find it at your local hardware store & get as much or as little as you’d like…} a tee-shirt {i chose one of Gil’s that had gotten ruined in the laundry. it’s the perfect shade of mint green & i’m still trying to convince him i didn’t ruin it on purpose just for this project} a flat surface {the floor will work} & really sharp fabric scissors.
first lay your coupling out in the design you’d like to see it on the necklace {i did have to use a little warm water and goo gone to get the sticky glue from the labels off the copper} then cut the back of the tee-shirt into 6-8 long 1 & 1/2 inch wide strips…
i tried various knotting, braiding and tying techniques but this way seemed to work best. i doubled up the tee-shirt strips, laced the copper on & worked my way up the sides, first by keeping things centered & knotting where necessary to hold the necklace together. do this with both rows if you’re layering…
keep tying strips on as you see fit. i decided i wanted a bow at the back so that i could adjust the length of the necklace, but you could have a piece that goes around the back of your neck is attatched to the rest of the necklace on the sides as well… then trim the scattered & untamed pieces so it’s all neat & clean…
& voila, you’re done! i also love the options with this project! use different colors &/or fabrics to dress it up or down… i kind of wanted that “anthropologie statement necklace, but wear it with a tank top” look & it’s perfect! hope you love it… -hg
