the cross-body bag…
Posted: April 14, 2011 Filed under: personal., style & fashion. 3 Comments »so, i know cross body bags have been all the rage for a while… no new fashion update in this blog post! but i have been getting more compliments than usual on the one that i carry and there are so many reasons to love them, i’d thought i’d share anyways.
now, i love a big bag! my vintage noe is usually a black hole of goodness… travel wallet, hair brush, B&B dry shampoo, lots of chapstick options, and sometimes a good book but it can be a hassle to carry it everywhere. when i’m antiquing, vintage shopping and running around town tackling errands and whatnot, i just need the essentials. license, debit card, powder compact and iphone. I even take my single car keys off the rest of my chain and it all fits perfectly in this little beauty with some room to spare…

my vintage Dooney & Bourke found @Ebay {it even attaches to your belt... havent worn it that way yet, but hey!}
there are lots of options out there! if you’re a preppy-bohemian girl, you’ll love this one… {invite me out on your yacht!}
not all Dooney’s are super chic… but, if you stick to the classics like the “all weather leather,” duck mini’s and original equestrian styles you can’t go wrong…
don’t forget about etsy and ebay… it’s fun to go on the hunt to find something you think is absolutely perfect…
i’ll leave you with one that i’m LOVING. it’s pricey though, which is why Marc and i have a constant love/hate relationship…
where have you found your favorite cross-body?? enjoy and be curious! hg
new favorite: bangle…
Posted: April 12, 2011 Filed under: personal. Leave a comment »many of you know that i’m a creature of habit most of the time… for example, i’ve worn the same handmade gold bangle everyday for about 3 & 1/2 years. i found it at City Art Works {a super fun, eclectic place that i love to visit!} of course, i mixed it with lots of others and i did take it off ONCE for my wedding day… but today, i stumbled upon a new one that i just had to have… and i even replaced my old one, for now.
it’s by Alex and Ani… they specialize in designing products that allow each wearers uniqueness shine through… they are inspiring, extremely personal, adjustable, oh and did i mention that they’re eco-friendly! made entirely of recycled brass. love it.
i bought mine at NORDSTROM of course… {if you didn’t know, i’m a “nordy” all the way, not only do i love the place but i work there!} i decided on the brass initial bangle. the “g” is in the perfect font… and i’m loving it. you can also load them up in stacks… sounds just lovely huh?
buy one for yourself, and one for a friend if you’ve been looking for a great gift… be curious! hg
cupcakes for samaritan’s feet…
Posted: April 9, 2011 Filed under: business., cupcakes., personal. 1 Comment »i get asked to donate cake &/or cupcakes a lot! but recently, i was asked about donating cupcakes for Samaritan’s Feet. they were hosting a benefit event here in Charlotte… they needed 250 cupcakes for their Caribbean themed dinner party. 250?!?! that’s a lot of cupcakes… and it’s the most i’ve ever baked at once. but hey, there’s a first time for everything right?
i was excited to offer my God-given gift to help some sweet kiddies get some new shoes. the more research i did on the organization, the more excited i got… did you know that the founder, Emmanuel “Manny” Ohonme lives right here in the Queen City with his wife and 4 kids?! did you know that it’s {not just a non-profit, nor just a humanitarian aid organization – but a community of more than 70,000 volunteers who have joined together to make a difference in the lives of children in need in every corner of the world. from a dream to the reality of nearly 3,000,000 impoverished children in over 40 nations being served by having their feet washed, receiving a new pair of shoes, and hearing a message of hope.
to play off the Caribbean themed event, i decided on 3 really fun flavors: lemon cake dipped in raw sugar, white and chocolate cake dipped in sweet coconut and introducing: key lime cake, perfectly dipped in graham cracker crumbs, just like key lime pie. {thank you cinzia lubrano… i love when my friends have amazing cupcake insight.} they turned out great, and hopefully they will be enjoyed by many tonight as the vision of Samaritan’s Feet is shared here in our city…
if you’re interested {which you should be} you can: read stories. stay connected. get involved. donate. and even volunteer. with Samaritan’s Feet… be curious! hg {and thank you olivia, for all of your help and loveliness!}
the power of honey…
Posted: April 4, 2011 Filed under: health & wellness., how to. 1 Comment »so… if you know me or hang out with me already, you know i’m a big natural health guru… i am all about doing your own research, then making your own decisions in faith on what you should do. i try not to overwhelm people with my “interesting facts” or random thoughts on things like dairy, chiropractic care, vaccinations, natural birth, raw vitamins, dryer sheets, the government or how your body is God’s temple and you need to treat it right! ok, ok, i by NO means know everything, or have any type of medical degree but i like to learn and i like to try to be healthy.
i thought i’d let my first health and wellness blog post be about something fun like bees. well, it’s really about local raw honey and the benefits it has that you probably didn’t even know about… there are lots of “superfoods” out there to boost your immune system, but few are as potent as bee pollen.
did you know:
- that raw honey can actually fight off bacteria and parasites. it contains natural antibiotics that can help kill them directly. applying honey topically to a wound can not only speed up the healing process with it’s plethera of vitamins, minerals and enzymes but can heal the tissue while preventing infection. bacteria simply cannot live, so the infection reverses itself. {you can even read about the results of cesarean patients using honey after surgery here.}
- that 1 out of every 5 people suffer from insomnia. we’ve all heard of people like michael jackson who allegedly died post a crazy concoction of sleeping medications. people are so desperate to fall asleep that the un-natural drugs they cram into their fragile bodies doesn’t allow them to wake back up. raw honey promotes healthy sleep. just 2 teaspoons in a cup of water, chamomile tea or warm almond milk will help knock you out, in a good way.
- you can condition your HAIR! mix honey with an equal amount of olive oil, lather the mix through your hair, then wrap your head up in a warm towel for about 30 minutes… then shampoo out. i’ve heard your hair has never looked or felt better! {haven’t tried it yet, but i will soon!}
- it can help with poor digestion… mix honey with an equal amount of apple cider vinegar and dilute to taste with a little h2o. it won’t only help your tummy but is great for the joints and even helps promote weight loss. {love it!}
- mixed with an equal amount of oatmeal it works as a great face masque. leave it on for 30 minutes, then wash it off… it’s an amazing deep cleanser and will help reduce acne and unwanted blemishes.
- it cools, removes pain and aids in fast healing when applied directly to burns. it not only keeps bacteria from growing but it also prevents scarring. {you can beat this stuff with a stick.}
- it can help with your allergies! {mine are TERRIBLE and always have been…} i’ve learned that local raw honey can sensitize you to the pollen in your area, and helps as a natural remedy. a spoonful a day is what my mum says to do… over a bowl of fruit, oatmeal, or in your tea, just get it into your system on a daily basis and it should help…
here are a few other articles you can check out thanks to a favorite website of mine… natural news.com: immune system. allergies. healing powers. honey health. keep in mind that raw honey means it hasn’t been pasteurized or filtered and comes directly from the bee hive. local means it’s from your specific area… we’ve got some straight from bee farmers here in Charlotte, NC and we LOVE it! check the local natural health food stores, farmers markets or online for the good stuff, but not your regular supermarket. the lists of benefits could go on and on, so be sure to check out some of the listed articles for more info. be curious! hg
hong kong vintage…
Posted: April 3, 2011 Filed under: antiques & trinkets., personal., style & fashion., sunday funday... Leave a comment »i’ve decided to start a new, fun little blog category called sunday funday. each time i’ll fill you in on things that i like to do for fun. mostly around town but we’ll just see where it goes.
first up, one of my all time favorite places: hong kong vintage. nestled snugly in a row of shops right on central avenue, it’s where i find most of my vintage dresses. {i have so many in my collection that they deserve their own blog post later…} it’s quaint, has that wonderful “basement” smell and is full to the brim of good finds. elizabeth owns the place and she’s great. she began as a stylist and selling consignment but then started her own business. if you’re familiar with this spot, then you might know it used to be a little farther down central ave. but she’s upgraded to a new much larger spot with 2 dressing rooms and more space for the goods! i love that everything is organized in a r.o.y.g.b.i.v. kinda way. the sweaters are folded neatly into little cubbies and the little nook of handbags and suitcases always grabs my attention. rows and rows of vintage shoes and boots line the floors. there’s furniture, and lots of homey trinkets too. need a fun ashtray for a friend or a vintage fondue kit? now you konw where to look. don’t worry guys and kiddies… there is plenty for you too. tiny baby rompers, and a great collection of mens coats… you most likely won’t leave empty handed. be sure to check it out and tell elizabeth the looking glass says hi. hey, you might even run into me there! let me know what you find!? be curious! hg

i’ve discovered something i love…
Posted: April 2, 2011 Filed under: personal., style & fashion. 1 Comment »i’m not a very girly girl… i’ve NEVER permanently dyed my hair, i do my own eyebrows and i’ve done my makeup the exact same way almost everyday since high school {i do mix it up rarely with bright lipstick and a streak of bold eyeshadow.} but, i do LOVE nail polish. i mean, i really, really love it. and i love it even more when it looks perfect. and as we all know, manicures barely last getting your check card out of your wallet to pay for them, let alone a whole week or more.
i’m not sure how i even stumbled upon it, or if i heard it mentioned in conversation, but the words “gel polish” struck an interest. this incredible, new nail technology is cured on in layers by a UV light and is supposed to last 12-14 days without chipping. “this can’t be serious.” i thought. “it must be too good to be true.” i have 2 of the most hands-on jobs that i know of {other than hair artists!} i run a bakery {washing cake pans CONSTANTLY and using knives and food coloring} and i’m a stylist at Nordstrom {not to mention, we’re in a re-model so not only do i style mannequins, but i haul fixtures, use razor blades, dollies and hand trucks, paint, climb ladders, put up and take down lights, clean things and this list could go on forever} i’ve NEVER managed to maintain my nail polish, even if i paint it myself everyday!! so, i googled the magic stuff, watched some promotional videos and then called a few nail salons.
the 1st time i headed downtown… i was WAYYY overcharged & so disappointed that i actually cried {although the polish was amazing.} the 2nd time a friend and i shared a nail table with one artist because they were so busy. we were forced to do “just polish” instead of a manicure because of time, in a not so nice salon in plaza midwood {i love you central avenue, and again the polish was incredible.} i can’t believe it, but i am SOLD on gel polish. i have purposely NOT put on gloves, NOT been extra careful and NOT been “girly weird” about my nails and i’m here to say i can vouch for perfectly glossy, non-chipped nails for 13 days straight… work, cakes and all. not joking! {now, your cuticles will grow out, but the polish stays perfectly shaped.}
the 3rd time, {today} i had the best nail experience i’ve had EVER. i was amazed. a friend at work suggested a salon called “Foxy Nails” in Northlake Mall. i know you’re laughing because i did too, but why not try it after bad luck twice before? and well, 3rd time really is the charm. my artist was named Loan {pronounced Lon} and she was super sweet. she chatted with me, but not too much… this place was SPOTLESS!!!! they played good music and had the Food Network on tv instead of the news… everyone was so welcoming and the customer service was fab. the pedicure chairs were calling me, but maybe next week… a gel manicure is ONLY $23. and after 5 visits you get $5 off. i don’t normally rave about random businesses but, i wanted to give this one a shout out… they pretty much made my day after this long-haul of a work week.
if you’re interested in trying it out please visit. they have 2 locations: Northlake Mall {next to Dillards} and Albemarle Road.
if you’re in my area {North Charlotte} ask for Loan. i told her i’d be blogging about my excitement and even snapped a photo of her.
i’ve tried 3 brands of gel polish so far: shellac, opi gel and gelish. this place uses gelish which i’m loving! i tried this brand new minty green color {its my favorite color right now, and i’m painting 2 bathrooms in it soon enough.} try it, and let me know what you think! be curious… hg
my husband is bold, and it’s hot…
Posted: April 1, 2011 Filed under: personal. 1 Comment »can i just blog something personal for a second? i admire my husband Gil and his ability to get people thinking. and not just thinking a little, but a lot! about things that are really hard to talk about… {and sometimes even harder to think about for that matter!} but he’s sweet, and gentle about it and the boldness he shows inspires me. he doesn’t hold anything back, he’s not fake, he wants God’s absolute best for people… and you can check out his latest blog here. be curious. hg
