before & after: barely there entryway…

i just love entryways. of course they seem to be the place to toss keys, mail, shoes & what-not but they’re the real “welcome” to your humble abode. it’s also a visitors very first impression of the place you call home & they deserve to be well dressed & functional. i found these photos via pinterest & they were just the inspiration i was looking for… clean, bright, white, & mirrored with just the right amount of un-polished charm.

here’s our before. & proof of just how small we’re living! it’s a TINY, barely-there {if you blink you might miss it} spot right behind the front door, but i refuse to let any space in our home go without a purpose. every corner deserves to be used to its highest potential right?! that’s what living small is all about…

& the after!

ahhh shoe storage!

we’re SO thrilled with how it turned out. i’d been looking for a more traditional console table for months when we saw this shoe storage cabinet in the new ikea catalog… it was much more our style than most ikea furniture, the measurements were PERFECT for our teeny space & who can pass up a place to store 14+ pairs of shoes?! i actually love scattering my things here each day when i get home & it’s such a great storage solution, it almost never looks messy. i toss my headphones, lipstick & everything else into the cute striped drawer, smell the fresh flowers, & glance a smile at my grandma. oh & i’m planning to carry the black & white stripes to other parts of our downstairs so you’ll see more of those. :)

if you’re working on your own entryway don’t worry. these sometimes awkward spaces can be a little hard to design. i suggest really thinking through what you’d like to get out of the space. do you need a place to sit, baskets to hide things, or lots of hanging space? do you need to store umbrellas, children’s backpacks, or pet leashes? do what works for you & your family. it can be as simple as coat rack or as detailed as entire foyer… it’s your home & yours only. enjoy it, & be curious.

how to: natural laundry detergent…

thanks to this book we’ve been going all kinds of natural around chateau de gatch the past few months! {don’t mind my constant pretending we live in the french countryside} if you’ve read any of the skinny bitch books about kim’s vegan lifestyle you’ll love this one… it’s packed full of no-nonsense, tough-love information about cutting wordly un-natural crap out of your life. you’ve got to do your research people! i can guarantee the media, the places you shop & heck even your friends aren’t telling you the truth about what you’re putting on & most definitely in your bodies. {think past food to your kitchen surfaces, candles, water bottles, tampons, make-up, & even your clothes.} you’ll freak out once you open your eyes to the facts but doesn’t it feel good to know you can make a change?! i feel a huge responsibility to protect & take care of the house, family & body the Lord gave me.

gil & i changed some things immediately… plastics, toothpaste, hair products & we decided we’d start to switch out other things as we ran out of them. got to keep a watch on the monies right? i was most excited about making some of our own natural household products! first up laundry detergent & dishwasher detergent! the ones you buy at the store are full of NASTY toxic chemicals like chlorine bleach, phosphates & fragrances! little do we know about the allergic reactions, changes to your central nervous system & the damage to wildlife that they’re causing. well, not anymore! there are lots of recipes online for home-made detergents… this is just the one i liked best! so, here’s your how to…

{you should be able to find all of this at your local super store, grocery market, trader joes or natural health store!}

you’ll need:

  • an airtight container & a scoop
  • white vinegar {this natural acid will dissolve dirt!}
  • baking soda {a great deodorizer, will keep colors bright & whites white!}
  • washing soda {cuts oil, fights grease & stains!}
  • borax {a natural stain remover & disinfectant!}
  • liquid castile soap {a gentle cleanser. use any scent you’d like… i’m obsessed with lavendar. if you choose to use unscented you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil}

i spent some time searching online for recipes until i found one i really liked…

  • 1 1/4 cups white vinegar
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1 cup washing soda
  • 1 cup borax
  • 1/4 cup liquid castile soap

at first i wasn’t sure what i wanted to use to mix, but a wooden spoon worked best… in a large non-metal bowl start with the vinegar & add ingredients one by one in order of the recipe. STIR CONTINUOUSLY! {especially between the washing soda & borax} this was really important. my first batch became a little too solid to continue. oops! finish with the castile soap… it will seem like a thick semi-wet paste but as you continue stirring it will begin to look more like the early stages of bread dough or feta cheese. you’ll want to mash out as many large clumps as you can & keep stirring until it’s evenly cakey & crumbly.

i made a double batch {but mixed them separately} & dumped it into my container. use 1/4 cup each load. we’re going with 2 heaping tablespoons…

i used it for the first time yesterday! it smells great, our whites came out clean & bright & i’m excited to see how much money we’ll save because this stuff is SO inexpensive! not to mention you’ll have plenty of supplies left over for other home-made cleaners! i can’t believe i ever paid $12+ for a bucket of poison. let me know if you love it… be curious!

new favorite: ruby woo…

let’s be honest, red lipsticks are hard to find… there are orangey red, blueish reds, pinky reds. it’s bananas!

i’ve been on the hunt for a new staple color… a classic matte red that has just the right amount of punch but is still lady-like enough to wear often, maybe everyday, maybe not. ya know what i mean? one that looks like this:

& i think i’ve found it. i only had to describe” it” once & my sweet as candy friend Jessi at the MAC counter via NORDSTROM knew exactly what i meant. MAC RETRO MATTE: RUBY WOO. sold. done. let’s go.

keep in mind that i’ve got pretty pale skin, but i still think it will translate well across skin types… it’s bold, bright, a perfect apple red & stays on forever… a tiny sweep of chapstick before painting it on will lock in some moisture. i love the retro librarian feel it had when i wore it with my glasses {it’s time for gil & i to get new ones but these  a la high school  square lovelys still work just fine.}

what’s your go-to red lipstick? be curious… shop ruby woo here.

antiquing find: printing press drawer…

oh st. augustine… it’s been just the relaxing vacation i’ve needed. running on the beach, laying by the pool, reading books & blogs, resting, resting, resting & just a little shopping. yesterday the grandparents took me up to jacksonville to do a little antiquing… i was looking for clocks to add to our collection {& i knew those would be small enough to travel home on the plane} but i didn’t see ONE. baby ben’s must be extinct here or something, geez. BUT i did find this beauty. an antique printing press drawer. i’ve kind of always wanted one. i’m not sure yet if i’m going to hang it in our upstairs hallway or if i’ll use it on our coffee table.

what do you think?

it sure is a beauty right? i’m loving the original drawer pull…

i fell in love with a bombshell…

i’ve had stick straight hair my whole life. i often begged my mom to curl my hair as a kid… party, dance, wedding or saturday, it just wouldn’t work. EVER. no amount of aqua-net could get any curl to stay longer than a few minutes before it fell flat. flat. flat. i was constantly heartbroken, comparing myself to the “other girls” & eventually got over the fact that it just wasn’t happening for me. these days i rock the “fresh out of the shower & then slept on for a few nights” look a la the man repeller… it’s got a little natural wave & it works for me.

but wait. this past weekend something amazing happened. i got invited to a Sultra Demo at Nordstrom. my Cosmetic gal pals wanted to see my length hair curled BAD & i didn’t mind being the test subject. because why not? the stylist, Dale was so sweet to wait for me to get off work & head down to the Cosmetics department… i’ve been told that their curlers {actually, all their products} are ahhmazing & i was excited to finally see them in action. i chose to try the newer Bombshell Cone Rod Curling Iron. it boasts Sultra’s “exclusive No-Slip ThermaGrip Tapered Barrel” & creates curls that go from loose to tight.

let’s just say i was hooked from the moment that first curl dropped. just look.

here are MY favorite things about the Sultra products… i asked Dale a lot of questions & she really showed me what was so special about these tiny machines.

  • the Bombshell’s barrel provides constant, even 360°f heat. it’s loaded with Japanese Kyocera® Ceramic Technology & it actually repairs the hair with infrared rays while you style. {i’m not kidding when i say my hair was softer after being curled than before!}
  • the no-slip grip actually holds your hair in place, so there’s no sliding while you’re trying to curl… curls come out tight, springy & gorg.
  • these curlers have said bye bye to the old school clamps. no creases, lines or flat spots.
  • all Bombshell curlers come with a sexy pink styling glove… as soon as you start to feel heat radiate the glove, that means your curl is done.
  • last but not least these puppies have universal voltage! travel the world with them with no worries of blowing up your bombshell, flat or hotel room. {be sure to check out the travel hair dryer.}

i just happened to have my bangs pulled back this day… dale just blended them in.

i LOVED the way my hair felt & looked. & i even wore it still-curly the next day. talk about exciting! wow. i can’t wait to buy one of these saucy pups. you can buy Sultra products at NORDSTROM of course & you can check out their brand while shopping here. be curly. be curious.

& thanks dale! you were awesome.
