nifty gifts to give 1.0:

with christmas right around the corner, i’ve decided to start a new category called: nifty gifts to give. i LOVE to give gifts… birthday gifts, wedding gifts, job promotion gifts, new puppy gifts,  just because i love you gifts, happy new apartment gifts… all gifts are amazing. it’s a moment to show someone how much you care about them, to make them smile and my favorite part: to give them something they wouldn’t normally just get for themselves. that’s what a REAL gift is. when it’s not for you, it needs to be great… over the top… extra special and something they’ll really, really love.

first up is one of my favorites… iPhone compatible gloves. yep, you heard right…  i bought these for my mom last christmas {and achartreuse pair for myself}. not only are they GENIUS, but they work great, are super cute and the PERFECT gift for any lady in your life, young or less young. i’ll be stock-piling these this year as well… {close friends of mine, please act surprised.} available at NORDSTROM {fashion accessories} and NORDSTROM.COM… $35.00

& don’t forget about the men in your life… also available via nordy’s

happy gift giving… be curious! hg.

travel to: st. augustine, florida

my last summer vacation in St. Augustine, Florida has just come to a close. i always imagine if just staying forever would be possible… ya know, having a vespa & working at the cutest touristy spot or oceanside dive… wearing a bathing suit, shorts & racerback tank everyday… not having to worry about my endless list of things to do or always rushing around with little sleep. I guess that’s why they call it vacation, or retirement! but the time to head home always comes & it’s always bittersweet.

view on crescent beach…

if you know me, then you know I’m not  much of a “beach bum.’ this pale freckled skin {thanks dad} has fallen victim to sun poisoning too many times to count {no worries, I won’t post photos of the 2nd degree burns} & I’d rather be curiously following cobblestone streets somewhere I can’t pronounce but, I LOVE St. Augustine. in my opinion it’s one of the most beautiful & fun places on the planet. it’s quaint, gorgeous & there’s so much to do whether you’re married, visiting with a friend, or the whole family… kids included. here’s my first official travel post on {my favorite} things to do and sights to see in St. Augustine, Florida.

things to do:

  • Climb 219 to the top of the St. Augustine Lighthouse. {it’s exhilarating, the view is breathtaking, & it’s “supposedly” haunted… it was even on ghost hunters… oh & they do night tours.}
  • Check out Castillo de San Marcos, the famous fort. {even better, visit St. Augustine for July 4th & watch the firework show from here… best. fireworks. ever.} some 1,500 residents sought shelter here when the English tried to take the city in 1702… they ransacked the city but couldn’t take the fort, maybe because of the alligator filled moat.
  • Get tattooed &/or pierced at Ms. Deborah’s Fountain of Youth. {this purple house is the only place to get pierced in the city & although i don’t wear them anymore, my favorite ear piercing was done here… back. in. the. day.}
  • Take a Trolley Tour! Don’t be embarrased to hop on with all the other tourists… this is your best option for sightseeing the MOST for your money all while getting a great history lesson…
  • You’re in the Oldest City in the Nation so you need to check out historic downtown! You can enter the original city gates {built in 1808} & stroll down St. George Street… there are lots of  cute shops, art galleries and more. I love the Spanish history here, venture into the Spanish Quarter and you’ll feel like you’ve traveled 200 years back in time.
  • Go for a run! Here’s a link full of great routes all around the city… from 1 mile to 9+ theres one for you!
  • Go antique shopping at Avonlea Antique Mall near Jacksonville… you’re sure to find some great things! check out my finds here.
  • The best shopping around is in Jacksonville at the St. John’s Town Center… it wins my vote for the best outdoor shopping i’ve ever seen & it’s a Simon Mall!
  • Visit the San Sebastian Winery. It’s local & they offer free tours and tastings! {oh & they use muscadine grapes!}
  • Take surf lessons! Call Pit Surf Shop {904}471-4700 {$70 per person & $55 each for 2 people}
  • Take the kiddies to The Alligator Farm… {they’ll love it. enough said.} or to Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum. duh!
  • Take an Airboat Ride in the Central Florida Everglades. Midway in Christmas, Florida is the best. {it’s a little “out-there” but you will NOT regret it… this is by far one of the most fun things I’ve ever done…ever & you never know what kind of crazy shenanigans you could get into… you won’t believe it until you’ve seen it. you’ll love the python that makes it self at home next to the coke machine & there are usually baby alligators to play with. for serious.}
  • Check out the shops north of downtown on San Marco Avenue. I love: Down the Rabbit Hole, Wolf Head Books, & there are 4 cute antique shops!

gil and i at the lighthouse…

the fort…

props to this guy for living in florida and working in costume at a national monument…

hubs at the city gates… built in 1808

wine tour…

amazing books at wolf’s head…

you know i LOVE an alice themed store full of vintage trinkets…

sights to see:

  • Flagler College {Built in 1888 as a hotel with Thomas Edison himself running the electricity through the place… it’s now a top private liberal arts college.}
  • Stationed in a garden right outside Ripley’s Believe it or Not is the statue of David. {built from one piece of marble from the same quarry as the original it’s one of 2 replicas in the entire world… it’s ahhhmazing, thank you Michelangelo.}
  • The St. Johns County Pier is the cheapest thing on my list & oh so fun. Watch fishermen catch, surfers surf and enjoy the beachfront park, with playground, sand volleyball courts, live music & other events. there’s even a farmers market each Wednesday… you’re welcome.

on the pier…

places to eat:

  • The Columbia was founded in 1905 and is a must-visit. Their authentic Spanish cuisine is delish. Sit in the courtyard, make sure you get the “1905 Salad” and try either their famous sangria or a mojito with real sugar cane shooting out. yep.
  • The Tini Martini Bar is attached to the Casablanca Inn. It’s gorgeous! sit on the big front porch. watch the sun set while looking out at the water while the horse and carriage roll by. very romantic… i love the chocolate martini but their entire menu is to die for.
  • Reef is the most legit “oceanfront” place to dine… fresh local seafood and the view is so beautiful it’s hard to describe.
  • Harry’s Seafood is right downtown and they have an incredible candlelit garden patio… it’s romantic and swanky with authentic New Orlean’s Style eats.
  • The Beachcomber is my favorite beachfront dive for breakfast… it’s uber laid back and you can walk right out on the beach afterwards, but make sure you get there early on Sunday.

view from dinner at Reef…

things to know about st. augustine:

  • it’s only a half hour from Jacksonville {north} & Daytona {south}
  • it’s 2 hours from Orlando and Disney World.
  • there are tons of hotel & vacation houses… check them out here.
  • there’s a great new public parking spot near historic downtown… this is your best bet. it’s close to everything & you can also rent vespas, & segways to sightsee if you’d like.
  • there are multiple beaches since you’ll be near the coast & an island but they’re all nice!!

I will say that I’ve been spoiled with grandparents who have always had a condo here… the private, quiet beaches weren’t too shabby growing up. now that they live here full time, they’re about 2 miles from the ocean on Anastasia Island. it’s seriously a beautiful place. i’ve lost count of how many times i’ve been and i NEVER tire of the touristy activities & sights… you’ll love it. be curious… & plan a trip! happy end of summer… it looks like fall is on the way.

antiquing in the sunshine state…

my mom and i headed to St. Augustine {one of my favorite places ever} to visit my grandparents and spend a long weekend at the beach. thankfully, we passed the hurricane on the way down and it’s beautiful here! i’m calling it the #3generationweekend… my mom, gramma and i have all kinds of fun plans and i’m hoping high tea is on the list today. before we got here we had my gramma scouting out a great antique place for us to go shopping. she told us she’d heard of a great place in Jacksonville around San Jose. we headed up there yesterday {in their huge SUV} to check it out. it’s called Avonlea Antique Mall… it’s a lot like the queen city’s Sleep Poet, but in a newer style building. we actually grabbed lunch first at their delicious little lunching spot! {sleepy poet, hint: it was so nice to sit down to a yummy, quick lunch. we were energized and ready to shop after that. can i see a cafe in your future?!} i’ve been sticking to my LIST lately while antique/house shopping. {more tips to come in another post} but, it prevents me from buying things i don’t really need/have space for and i don’t feel bad about buying something on the list once i find it!

i thought i’d share my findings with you all… i was on the hunt for a round table and i’m happy to say that i found one and bought it! so that’s getting checked off the list… yay! i had to pass up the $1495.00 one that i loved, but this one is perfect!

i'm loving the scallop shape...

i almost had a heart attack when i saw these beauties… the golden-yellow reminds me of an old 30′s theater. they will be perfect for when we have extra guests at our tiny house.

it sounds weird, but the bathroom at this place was like another store. vintage clothes and trinkets for sale everywhere… i bet it’s hard to get people out of there! we stopped in on our way out and i found this french souvenir scarf… i just couldn’t pass it up. the colors are perfect for fall and it’s a fabulous vintage print to add to my ever growing collection.

if you’re ever in the Jacksonville area, be curious… and make time to stop in. {this place will definitely be on my list of favorite things in another upcoming travel post about St. Augustine…} happy weekend my lovely readers! hg

thrifting finds: 08.20.11

i hit 77 north this past saturday to visit Value Village in Mooresville… every now and then i get an itch to see what might be hiding around the piles of weirdness… i tired on a lot {including a vintage PORTS knit skirt, sadly it didn’t sit right on these hips!} and found a few cute things worth bringing home…

one: this not at all tarnished gold wrap bracelet… {$.80 cents}

two: i’m loving oversized blouses lately, and this striped one is just what i needed to get ready for fall… {and what a great vintage print!} you can’t go wrong with black and white. {$3.50}

three: another fall find… a sweet navy knitted capelet & i think it’s hand made. i’m loving the equestrian buttons and fringe… come on fall weather! {$5.50}

i may have spent more on my high octane gas than what i actually puchased but, it was fun. sometimes you just need to get out of the house and go looking for trinkets and whatnot. be curious…

before & after: mirrored dresser…

i’ve always love mirrored furniture. it’s alluring, elegant, it seems “grand” somehow and it’s always breathtaking… i love that it also creates an illusion of more space by reflecting what’s around it. here are a few photos i heart…

i always heart anthropologie furniture.

ahmazing console, i also heart this wallpaper.

i was on the search for a new dresser/nightstand for our master bedroom while Gil was in London last year. {i use all of his travel opportunities to do house projects! i did the dining chairs while he was in Virginia!} i wanted our room to have his & hers, bedside tables. Gil’s matches our tall dresser and is a little more masculine so i needed something girly and lovely… i ended up finding exactly what i was wanted for around $70 at one of my favorite spots: The Depot at Gibson Mill in Concord, NC. i was surprised at myself that i had no intention of changing the look of the dresser… the matte black paint and glass knobs were just perfect… but once i placed a few things on top i felt like it needed a little something. something pretty, clean and graceful to kick up the lady-likeness just a little… i measured the dresser top and called Binswanger Glass {they were the most reasonable of the 3 quotes i got} to order a piece of mirrored glass. {you can decide on your thickness, type of edge bevel and be sure to ask for clean edges so no one gets hurt!} i picked it up the next day and viola!  {cost: $40} not too shabby!

before:

and after:

have a dresser, console or desk that could use a little update?! try to mirror it and let me know what you think! be curious… hg

before & after: cane back dining chairs…

well, it’s finally time to show all of you the new finished dining chairs! it’s also my first before and after… yay! {i’m excited for this new category} and let me just say that i have a new found respect for anyone who works with furniture… it is NOT easy work. sanding, cleaning, scraping, painting, ripping, pliering, cutting, wrapping, and stapling. it’s intense and i never knew my hands could be so sore. it’s been a labor of love this entire week as i’ve worked like crazy to get them finished…

remember the 4 months of searching?! well, i finally found these beauties on craigslist… i convinced the seller to sell them to me minus the matching table and i got the deal of a lifetime! pocket change for six chairs!! {2 arm chairs and 4 side chairs} the husband was sweet enough to head with me to Salisbury on a sunday afternoon to pick them up. initially, it’s hard to look past the things you immediately aren’t in love with but, i knew the vision i had for these chairs would eventually come to be… monday i started sanding and painting… tuesday: more, wednesday: even more, thursday i started the reupholstering and even though i finished it, i’ve decided i don’t want to see a staple gun again for a VERY long time. friday: finishing touches and now we can sit in them! we’ve been patiently sitting at our coffee table every night for dinner…

honestly, they turned out much better than i expected and  my expectations were HIGH! i remember saying while sanding the very first chair “”gil, i’m not sure these are “the ones” yet, but i think they’ll turn out nice.”" he laughed, of course and i kept at it… but now i’m positive. they are everything i wanted and more… and i’m a very happy lady! i hope you like them!

BEFORE:

AFTER:

i hope this inspires you to go on the hunt for something you’ve really been dying for. you shouldn’t ever feel like you have to buy furniture “just to buy” it. this is your home you’re building!! make it the most charming and delightful place you have to escape, a place where you and your family can really be at home together… go all out, give it your all, and make it your own. oh, and be curious… hg

im obsessed: with french style…

i’m not sure what it is, but lately i’ve really been into french-esque style… maybe it’s because i can’t stop thinking about our honeymoon to PARIS next month! oh my! maybe it’s because the dream of a french garden in our backyard is eating me up! i can’t wait for it to cool down outside so i can get started on it… OR maybe it’s because all the fabulous photos i keep finding make me want to put a french twist on our casa as it continues to mold into US.

i know you’re thinking toile, but i don’t want french country… i want french chic’ with a modern freshness. worn hardwoods, velvet and burlap mixed together, cane back anything, pulled puff drapes, and curved feet on furniture, like this:

i have no words. i heart it all.

i heart cane back chairs.

haven't found the perfect ceiling medallion YET... almost.

Gil can we please!?!?!?!?!?

see, you can have comfortable and pristine...

ooh aah... bath time!

and who hasn’t daydreamed of being alive in Paris in the 1920′s… the sights, the sounds, the culture, the furniture!! and have you seen midnight in paris yet?! i have to admit i saw it twice, 2 days in a row… it’s fantastic. oh and let me mention that Owen Wilson’s name in the movie is Gil. how fitting? :) i’ve been chatting to the hubs about my new obsession a lot lately and i think i pointed out cane back at least 10 times while we were watching the flick… if you haven’t seen it yet, i highly recommend it! not only for the cute storyline, but for the breathtaking scenery, incredible costume and set design, AND you can thank me later for how it will inspire you. to paint, write, dance, explore cole porter, dress up, anything!

when i found this photo i squealed! first, what a perfect moment. oh, and notice the cast iron table bases {just like ours!} and the french cafe chairs… this became my new inspiration for our dining chairs… and what a work in progress that has been…

i missed my decade... i'm sure of it!

remember my post about the ghost chairs? well, i didn’t end up getting them after all… i seriously wanted them SO badly! i talked and talked about them, and even ordered them but, when you have an attentive, stylish and very much honestly interested in all things having to do with home or fashion, handsome husband like mine… his opinion matters. {we’re weird like that, i share my opinions about his golf gear too, and he let’s me!} and he HATED the ghost chairs. I could see where he was coming from of course, we could have bought 4 new sets of chairs for what they cost and they are made of PLASTIC. ok, ok, ok! so, i decided to wait… until i found something else i LOVED. something with more character and maybe something of a project.

although i didn’t blog about it, french inspired cane back chairs were what i was hunting for… FOR 4 MONTHS. for four months, i shopped online every where i could think of, i checked craigslist all the time, i trecked around every antique store within driving distance and most recently i even tried to convince Gil to let me ship some home from Paris itself if i found some there… but, i found them. and they are perfectly perfect in every way. i can’t wait to show them to you, but not quite yet!

i’ve been working hard and my goal is to have them finished and blog posted by this weekend. until then, share your favorite french style with me and be curious… hg

this blog post is dedicated to my sweet neighbors katie and taylor who let me borrow their mac charger. {mine was chewed by henry then bun… again! and i have to buy a new one stat!} thanks friends!!

how to: indoor succulent garden

i’ve been seeing succulents everywhere for quite a while… on home decor blogs like here, in anthropologie stores, in magazines and we even just planted some at Nordstrom. i became enamored by the fact that there were SO many different kinds available! i’m not one to have indoor house plants {other than flowers} but i loved the idea of having something fresh and alive on our large coffee table, and i’m always up for a new how-to project that i’ve never tackled before! the BEST part is, they require hardly any work what-so-ever… no, seriously!!  they do need full sunlight, but only need to be watered once a week {if the soil is dry} since they store water in their leaves {think aloe plant!} and can be planted indoors or out.

here are a few photos i thought were inspiring…

ummm... gorgeous!

ahhmazing idea for a cake!

here’s what you need to get started:

  • a planter {with a drainage hole if you’re planting outside…}
  • drainage rocks {if you’re planting inside and your planter has no drainage, like mine…}
  • cactus soil {hold 25% more water than traditional soil, your succulents will love it!}
  • succulents! there are so many to choose from so have FUN picking them out! i bought mine at Lowe’s… they were $4-$9 each, depending on the size. i really mixed them up to create interest… {i also wasn’t sure how many i would need so i bought a bunch and returned the 2 or 3 i didn’t end up using.} prepare for foreign language… i bought: echeveria {lola & dondo,} donkey tail {burito,} pachyveria {blue pearl,} hens n’ chicks {pacific blue ice,} platter plant & sedum species…

i'm usually like pheobe when it comes to potterybarn, but gil and i had a gift card and i thought this would be the perfect planter... i love it!

love!

it’s really important NOT to over-water succulents… they’ll die! and since this planter doesn’t have a drainage hole you’re going to make your own by covering the bottom layer of your planter with drainage rocks. this way, IF you happen to over-water, the h2O will have somewhere to go… then the soil can suck the water back up as soon as it needs it. genius!!

next, you want to start adding the cactus soil and then place your plants {and water them once before you plant them…} i started in the center with the largest ones, spreading them out evenly then i layered in the smaller ones, followed by the fillers.

don’t get discouraged if you don’t like it right away! i think i started over at least 4 times… gil was cracking up, but i wanted it to be perfect {according to me!} my only warning is: BE VERY CAREFUL! succulents are very fragile… be sure to pick them up by the roots only and nestle them gently. keep adding soil so that they are tucked in tightly…

the final product is to DIE for! let me know how yours turns out… hope you enjoy and be curious!

hong kong vintage…

i’ve decided to start a new, fun little blog category called sunday funday. each time i’ll fill you in on things that i like to do for fun. mostly around town but we’ll just see where it goes.

first up, one of my all time favorite places: hong kong vintage. nestled snugly in a row of shops right on central avenue, it’s where i find most of my vintage dresses. {i have so many in my collection that they deserve their own blog post later…} it’s quaint, has that wonderful “basement” smell and is full to the brim of good finds. elizabeth owns the place and she’s great. she began as a stylist and selling consignment but then started her own business. if you’re familiar with this spot, then you might know it used to be a little farther down central ave. but she’s upgraded to a new much larger spot with 2 dressing rooms and more space for the goods! i love that everything is organized in a r.o.y.g.b.i.v. kinda way. the sweaters are folded neatly into little cubbies and the little nook of handbags and suitcases always grabs my attention. rows and rows of vintage shoes and boots line the floors. there’s furniture, and lots of homey trinkets too. need a fun ashtray for a friend or a vintage fondue kit? now you konw where to look. don’t worry guys and kiddies… there is plenty for you too. tiny baby rompers, and a great collection of mens coats… you most likely won’t leave empty handed. be sure to check it out and tell elizabeth the looking glass says hi. hey, you might even run into me there! let me know what you find!? be curious! hg
