before & after: chandelier lightbulb switch…
Posted: March 16, 2013 Filed under: before & after., how to., interiors. Leave a comment »this week i did a quick update on our dining room chandelier… i’ve always loved the traditional chandelier bulbs because they’re classic but let’s be honest, sometimes classic can be a little boring.
here’s the before:
i really wanted a modern update… a little funk & something unexpected since the chandelier is already so glam. i picked up a few packages of round bulbs for $6 & came home to do the swtich.
it turned out to be the perfect update i was looking for… modern, fresh & definitely suttle. i love it.
& the after:
what do you think? there are tons of great light bulb options out there so be curious! bulbs are an inexpensive change-up that will make you feel updated right away. i’m working on a few other light fixtures around the casa & can’t wait to show you the edison bulbs!
the great outdoors…
Posted: September 28, 2012 Filed under: before & after., exteriors., living small., personal. 1 Comment »well, we’re almost finished with our very first BIG renovation project here at the gatch house… a brand new deck to replace our sinfully boring & unusable back yard!! it was on a hill, we couldn’t get grass to grow, only weeds… it did not feel homey nor provide a suitable place to entertain. actually our concrete patio was barely enough room for a table & 4 chairs. we moved the deck to the top of our project list once we realized that fall was right around the corner & we just knew it would be something we’d both really enjoy. we LOVE to sit, eat & relax outside plus adding square footage to our tiny living space won in the race against hardwood floors. so those will come later…
it’s been fun having a building permit in the front window & i’ve loved seeing the progress each day when i get home from work. but now that it’s almost done i’ve been obsessed with finding inspiration to make it look & feel amazing back there. i can’t wait to furnish it, plant tons of things & really make it feel like an extension of our home, french inspired & all.
i’m kinda bummed that we’ve missed all the outdoor clearance sales but it will come together eventually. home decor patience is not one of my virtues… alas, there are a few must-haves on my wish list:
-a couch of some kind {i’d really love to find a great sectional that’s not $7 grand.} or chaise lounges?!
-a fire pit
-string lights a la paris
-small trees, i’m thinking a fig or lemon tree & a few others too
-a grill {we don’t have one. YET.}
-gil wants some kind of cool large outdoor rug
-a raised herb garden
-& lots of pillows.
here’s what i’ve been pinning lately… take a peep.

wait, i wish i could afford this furniture for inside my house! love the mirrored table & all neutral pallette.
what’s your favorite part about your outdoor space? please share! can’t wait to show you all the final product soon… be curious!

before & after: barely there entryway…
Posted: August 31, 2012 Filed under: antiques & trinkets., before & after., interiors., living small., personal. Leave a comment »i just love entryways. of course they seem to be the place to toss keys, mail, shoes & what-not but they’re the real “welcome” to your humble abode. it’s also a visitors very first impression of the place you call home & they deserve to be well dressed & functional. i found these photos via pinterest & they were just the inspiration i was looking for… clean, bright, white, & mirrored with just the right amount of un-polished charm.
here’s our before. & proof of just how small we’re living! it’s a TINY, barely-there {if you blink you might miss it} spot right behind the front door, but i refuse to let any space in our home go without a purpose. every corner deserves to be used to its highest potential right?! that’s what living small is all about…
& the after!
we’re SO thrilled with how it turned out. i’d been looking for a more traditional console table for months when we saw this shoe storage cabinet in the new ikea catalog… it was much more our style than most ikea furniture, the measurements were PERFECT for our teeny space & who can pass up a place to store 14+ pairs of shoes?! i actually love scattering my things here each day when i get home & it’s such a great storage solution, it almost never looks messy. i toss my headphones, lipstick & everything else into the cute striped drawer, smell the fresh flowers, & glance a smile at my grandma. oh & i’m planning to carry the black & white stripes to other parts of our downstairs so you’ll see more of those.
if you’re working on your own entryway don’t worry. these sometimes awkward spaces can be a little hard to design. i suggest really thinking through what you’d like to get out of the space. do you need a place to sit, baskets to hide things, or lots of hanging space? do you need to store umbrellas, children’s backpacks, or pet leashes? do what works for you & your family. it can be as simple as coat rack or as detailed as entire foyer… it’s your home & yours only. enjoy it, & be curious.
*shoe cabiet: ikea.
*french mirror: the depot at gibson mill.
*pink depression glass & brass turtle: vintage from my grandma.
*black & white stripe hooks: anthropologie.
*picture frame: target {i love this polaroid of my late gran gran & my dad in his teens.}
*flowers: from the ONLY place i like to buy flowers: the kings drive farmers market, charlotte nc.
i fell in love with a bombshell…
Posted: August 9, 2012 Filed under: before & after., favorites., style & fashion. 3 Comments »i’ve had stick straight hair my whole life. i often begged my mom to curl my hair as a kid… party, dance, wedding or saturday, it just wouldn’t work. EVER. no amount of aqua-net could get any curl to stay longer than a few minutes before it fell flat. flat. flat. i was constantly heartbroken, comparing myself to the “other girls” & eventually got over the fact that it just wasn’t happening for me. these days i rock the “fresh out of the shower & then slept on for a few nights” look a la the man repeller… it’s got a little natural wave & it works for me.
but wait. this past weekend something amazing happened. i got invited to a Sultra Demo at Nordstrom. my Cosmetic gal pals wanted to see my length hair curled BAD & i didn’t mind being the test subject. because why not? the stylist, Dale was so sweet to wait for me to get off work & head down to the Cosmetics department… i’ve been told that their curlers {actually, all their products} are ahhmazing & i was excited to finally see them in action. i chose to try the newer Bombshell Cone Rod Curling Iron. it boasts Sultra’s “exclusive No-Slip ThermaGrip Tapered Barrel” & creates curls that go from loose to tight.
let’s just say i was hooked from the moment that first curl dropped. just look.
here are MY favorite things about the Sultra products… i asked Dale a lot of questions & she really showed me what was so special about these tiny machines.
- the Bombshell’s barrel provides constant, even 360°f heat. it’s loaded with Japanese Kyocera® Ceramic Technology & it actually repairs the hair with infrared rays while you style. {i’m not kidding when i say my hair was softer after being curled than before!}
- the no-slip grip actually holds your hair in place, so there’s no sliding while you’re trying to curl… curls come out tight, springy & gorg.
- these curlers have said bye bye to the old school clamps. no creases, lines or flat spots.
- all Bombshell curlers come with a sexy pink styling glove… as soon as you start to feel heat radiate the glove, that means your curl is done.
- last but not least these puppies have universal voltage! travel the world with them with no worries of blowing up your bombshell, flat or hotel room. {be sure to check out the travel hair dryer.}
i LOVED the way my hair felt & looked. & i even wore it still-curly the next day. talk about exciting! wow. i can’t wait to buy one of these saucy pups. you can buy Sultra products at NORDSTROM of course & you can check out their brand while shopping here. be curly. be curious.
& thanks dale! you were awesome.

how to: hidden tab curtains…
Posted: July 24, 2012 Filed under: before & after., how to., interiors., living small. Leave a comment »i’ve been meaning to tackle these curtains for a while… our extra bedroom has now become a “study/library” since the hubs is working on his masters & we don’t often have visitors… (my not-so-secret plan is to one day finish our garage so that it can be his “man space.” that way ALL his books, instruments, pipes & what-nots can have their own space while i have a a gorgeous monica-like fancy guest room, or nursery if babes come along one day.) we’ll see.
i had to replace two panels that our bunny accidentally chewed up a few months back. (he got stuck behind a piece of furniture that used to be against this wall & we think he was trying to fight his way out…) i shortened them & put them in the attached bathroom… they are perfect & now i can check that off our to-do list! the curtains are from ikea & i love them. you can find them here. they’re the bright white i wanted, just sheer enough, cheap & they have this cute pin-tuck design in stripes that gives them the perfect amount of femininity. the only thing i didn’t like about them was that they’re tab curtains. in my opinion, they’re just a little too un-finished for me… i think curtains should really anchor a room, look polished & be an “ahh moment” when you enter.
so, i pulled out my sewing machine, ran a quick white bobbin & got to work. it was REALLY simple, took only about an hour & really made a huge difference! here’s the how-to:
step one: make sure your curtains & tabs are ironed, they’ll be much easier to work with.
step two: fold tabs back & fold under edge so that it’s even with the pocket. {you can pin them all ahead of time if you’d like but i just folded them & sewed as i went along.}
step three: try your hardest to sew on top of the already-there seam… i stitched a 1/2 inch centered on the tab. don’t forget to reverse a few times so it’s nice & tight.
step four: voila! now, hang them back up!
i hope you found this little project simple enough & please let me know if you try it. be curious!
living small: under the cabinets…
Posted: July 1, 2012 Filed under: before & after., how to., interiors., living small. Leave a comment »living small often means using every inch of space you have to it’s fullest potential… no “usable” space should go unused for long! our quaint little townhouse didn’t come with a pantry OR a linen closet {something i don’t remember thinking was important at the time of purchase…hmm} so, we’ve created a “pantry” in our large downstairs closet & learned that our kitchen cabinet space is crucial.
if there’s one thing besides amazingness that you should know about my hubs it’s that he loves coffee. quad tall americanos left & right. i needed to open up some cabinet space & also wanted to make a few coffee cups more accessible… the space under the cabinet that holds the coffee supplies seemed like a perfect place to start! 4 brass hooks & one dollar later, ta da!
who knew that something so simple could make such a difference! we love the easy-to-grab mugs & you can find our coffee maker here. we HEART it a whole lot… here are a few other under-the-cabinet ideas… all via pinterest. of course.
oh, & please share any under the cabinet tips you might have… the options are endless! be curious!
living small: built in bookcase…
Posted: June 14, 2012 Filed under: antiques & trinkets., before & after., favorites., interiors., living small., personal. Leave a comment »it’s no secret that gil & i have a lot of books… hundreds actually to say the least. they’re everywhere: shelves, boxes, closets, cabinets, not to mention the jam packed 6 foot tall bookcase in gil’s office at work. i’m not sure where they all came from but they had to have somewhere to go, even if it was just the collection of our favorites. well, i guess i do know where they all came from… i’m a collector of everything… husband here is now a theology student (the amazon packages arrive weekly) & we’re both constantly scowering eBay for our favorite first editions.
we’d already decorated our wedding with them but here in the land of living small, we needed a solution. my list of projects for this château is long but i knew if it involved books, i had a better chance of getting the husband on board quickly {smile} & we had the perfect bookshelf sized nook to the right of our fireplace. i’d used it as an office space with an antique desk & shelves a while back, but lately it was empty, un-used space… & un-used space does NOT work when you’re living small.
after a lot of research & a few estimates my dad recommended a long-time friend of his. i sent some measurements his way & voila! he had it built-in no time & we set up a saturday for him to come over & install it. i was SO excited & stood close by the entire time {i’m sure making it more difficult for him to focus} i’d overestimated how “quick & easy” installing something like this was. it was cereal. cutting & ripping out baseboards, measuring & making holes in the casing for outlets we wanted to be able to use & lots & lots nailing. not to mention the finishing touches of filling holes, caulking & painting. carpentry is a fabulous art! here are some photos of it all coming together…
it turned out more gorgeous than i expected & had ever hoped! the detail is perfection and we LOVE the solid adjustable shelves. i did decide to keep them evenly spaced to create some harmony since there’s so much going on in such a small space. our entire first floor is one large open room {foyer, living room, dining room & kitchen.} i was completely inspired online by books organized via color & used this photo to lead my imagination as i filled the shelves up…
now, here’s our finished product!

bottom shelves detail {we love having our Bose player hiding down here… oh & i’m aware that the wars aren’t in order. my husband asked for those to be rearranged… i love him.}
do any of you have built-in bookcases?! i’d love to know how you arrange your books & whatnot! be curious friends!
the ivy update…
Posted: April 11, 2012 Filed under: before & after., exteriors., favorites. 3 Comments »i wrote a post about my ivy obsession here last fall & now some six months later i have an update for you! i’ve done a little more research on the best way to get the front of our house ivy covered just like the english countryside castles i’m in love with…
i decided to start with new freshinglings instead of the grown plants i had {they weren’t looking too hot.} i bought traditional english ivy at lowes & i planted 4 plants across the front of our house. 2 are situated to the left of the front door… i’m hoping to train these up & over the door, eventually moving across the rest of the house. i’ve been told within 2 seasons that it should be climbing fast! i’ve been childishly watching & watering them each day & surprisingly enough in 2 weeks they’ve grown a lot. the tiny leaves are already going up, up up!
i’ll be sure to keep you posted on the progress. my plan is to add small pieces of chicken wire or trellis once the ivy gets going… that way it can jump from the ground to something close to the brick, & then onto the brick itself. we’ll see! i’m excited! do you have ivy on your house? i’d love to know… & be curious!
before & after: under $20 light fixture re-vamp…
Posted: November 5, 2011 Filed under: before & after., how to., interiors., living small. Leave a comment »every house, new or old has little things we’d all like to change. and sometimes, just one tiny change-up can equal one great re-vamp!
one of the reason’s i loved this house when i first saw it was the fact that it WASN’T upgraded yet… sounds crazy, but i liked the idea of skipping the fancies and having a clean pallette to work with. of course there’s a lot we’d like to do, {hardwood floors, granite countertops, a deck and built-in bookcases} we get to do it on our own timeline and on our own terms. and i’m indecisive {i can hardly decide if i should take a nap or not} so i like to do my research and spend time figuring out exactly what i want… while i’m in between planning the big projects, i like to tackle a few small ones to keep things moving and fresh!
this project takes less than an hour and cost me less than $20. and all you need is a screwdriver…
i recently noticed how out dated and extremely “builder’s basic” the sconces were in our downstairs half bath… yuck! the silver fixture itself is simple and perfect, but this carved glass had to go!
before:
after: i snagged the new ones at Lowe’s for $17.08… i’m loving the classic shape and clean lines. {thinking about changing all the ones on our ceiling fans to match next!}
voila’! hope this inspires you to re-vamp something this weekend! let me know what you’re up to! be curious… hg.
before & after: mirrored dresser…
Posted: August 16, 2011 Filed under: antiques & trinkets., before & after., favorites., how to., interiors., personal., uncategorized. 1 Comment »i’ve always love mirrored furniture. it’s alluring, elegant, it seems “grand” somehow and it’s always breathtaking… i love that it also creates an illusion of more space by reflecting what’s around it. here are a few photos i heart…

i always heart anthropologie furniture.
i was on the search for a new dresser/nightstand for our master bedroom while Gil was in London last year. {i use all of his travel opportunities to do house projects! i did the dining chairs while he was in Virginia!} i wanted our room to have his & hers, bedside tables. Gil’s matches our tall dresser and is a little more masculine so i needed something girly and lovely… i ended up finding exactly what i was wanted for around $70 at one of my favorite spots: The Depot at Gibson Mill in Concord, NC. i was surprised at myself that i had no intention of changing the look of the dresser… the matte black paint and glass knobs were just perfect… but once i placed a few things on top i felt like it needed a little something. something pretty, clean and graceful to kick up the lady-likeness just a little… i measured the dresser top and called Binswanger Glass {they were the most reasonable of the 3 quotes i got} to order a piece of mirrored glass. {you can decide on your thickness, type of edge bevel and be sure to ask for clean edges so no one gets hurt!} i picked it up the next day and viola! {cost: $40} not too shabby!
before:
and after:
have a dresser, console or desk that could use a little update?! try to mirror it and let me know what you think! be curious… hg
