all packaged up…

i understand that sometimes we all have good intentions of doing those amazing projects we keep on pinning… believe me my pinterest boards are FULL of things i’m hoping to get around to, yet i find myself saying “i just need to get the spray paint for that” or “once the deck is built then i’ll start working on this” & “if i could just find the perfect chairs then…” but honestly sometimes we just can’t do it all. we pick & choose the projects to complete now & the others linger on blogs & pinterest with the hope that we’ll see them come to pass… eventually.

i thought the natural laundry detergent just might be one of those projects for some of you… lots of you out there have kids, husbands, jobs, blogs & shops of your own & there just isn’t enough time in the day. it’s messy, bubbly & although i claim it’s easy to make, it did take me a while to perfect the recipe… so, i’ve packaged it up for you to buy… all natural lavender laundry soap.

oh yes. $6 will get you a whole quart of the good stuff. that means 20-40 loads of fresh, clean, natural, lavender smelling laundry & a glass jar to re-use once it’s empty… without the nasty harsh chemicals i talked about over here. if you’re local you can find it in my mom & i’s antique booth: maison number eleven at the depot at gibson mill in concord. if you’re far away i’ll be adding it to the looking glass etsy shop soon & you can email me at lovethelookingglass@gmail.com to order. be curious!

how to: natural laundry detergent…

thanks to this book we’ve been going all kinds of natural around chateau de gatch the past few months! {don’t mind my constant pretending we live in the french countryside} if you’ve read any of the skinny bitch books about kim’s vegan lifestyle you’ll love this one… it’s packed full of no-nonsense, tough-love information about cutting wordly un-natural crap out of your life. you’ve got to do your research people! i can guarantee the media, the places you shop & heck even your friends aren’t telling you the truth about what you’re putting on & most definitely in your bodies. {think past food to your kitchen surfaces, candles, water bottles, tampons, make-up, & even your clothes.} you’ll freak out once you open your eyes to the facts but doesn’t it feel good to know you can make a change?! i feel a huge responsibility to protect & take care of the house, family & body the Lord gave me.

gil & i changed some things immediately… plastics, toothpaste, hair products & we decided we’d start to switch out other things as we ran out of them. got to keep a watch on the monies right? i was most excited about making some of our own natural household products! first up laundry detergent & dishwasher detergent! the ones you buy at the store are full of NASTY toxic chemicals like chlorine bleach, phosphates & fragrances! little do we know about the allergic reactions, changes to your central nervous system & the damage to wildlife that they’re causing. well, not anymore! there are lots of recipes online for home-made detergents… this is just the one i liked best! so, here’s your how to…

{you should be able to find all of this at your local super store, grocery market, trader joes or natural health store!}

you’ll need:

  • an airtight container & a scoop
  • white vinegar {this natural acid will dissolve dirt!}
  • baking soda {a great deodorizer, will keep colors bright & whites white!}
  • washing soda {cuts oil, fights grease & stains!}
  • borax {a natural stain remover & disinfectant!}
  • liquid castile soap {a gentle cleanser. use any scent you’d like… i’m obsessed with lavendar. if you choose to use unscented you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil}

i spent some time searching online for recipes until i found one i really liked…

  • 1 1/4 cups white vinegar
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1 cup washing soda
  • 1 cup borax
  • 1/4 cup liquid castile soap

at first i wasn’t sure what i wanted to use to mix, but a wooden spoon worked best… in a large non-metal bowl start with the vinegar & add ingredients one by one in order of the recipe. STIR CONTINUOUSLY! {especially between the washing soda & borax} this was really important. my first batch became a little too solid to continue. oops! finish with the castile soap… it will seem like a thick semi-wet paste but as you continue stirring it will begin to look more like the early stages of bread dough or feta cheese. you’ll want to mash out as many large clumps as you can & keep stirring until it’s evenly cakey & crumbly.

i made a double batch {but mixed them separately} & dumped it into my container. use 1/4 cup each load. we’re going with 2 heaping tablespoons…

i used it for the first time yesterday! it smells great, our whites came out clean & bright & i’m excited to see how much money we’ll save because this stuff is SO inexpensive! not to mention you’ll have plenty of supplies left over for other home-made cleaners! i can’t believe i ever paid $12+ for a bucket of poison. let me know if you love it… be curious!

inspiration before vacation…

omg. it seems like we’ve been waiting forever & it also feels like time is just flying by… i can’t believe all i have to do tomorrow is head to charleston with the hubs on our summer vacation. we’ll be spending a whole week {don’t mess with our ex-cop house sitter! :) } celebrating gil’s 31st birthday {it’s monday but we’ll celebrate all week} & focusing all of our time on doing whatever our little hearts desire. we’ll shop, hit the beach, explore & eat amazing food but i’m most excited to be away from the hustle & bustle… to relax, rest, refocus, be quiet, & mostly be still, which is really hard for me to do! but i’ve got a new book, my bible & journal & lots of magazines for the beach. plus a handsome husband to spend every waking moment with. done & done.

i wanted to leave you all with a few things that i’ve found inspirational lately & a list of my favorite places to explore on the web… ya know, to keep you curious while i’m gone.

first up this ahhhmazing DIOR video shot at Versailles. it’s over the top in a dior kind of way, but just when you think it can’t get any better the fountains go off… & then just when you can’t breathe, the sun starts to set… & Paris glows in a way you just can’t explain unless you see it with you own eyes. maybe it’s because i’ve always been obsessed with Versailles & being there last year was a dream come true {reminder to myself: paris post.} but the grandeur of this place is unexplainable & so very inspiring…

2nd: an encouraging note… not sure sure who’s going through what but you can be inspired & blessed by this truth.

3rd: i mean come on… i dare you not to cry.

4th: i’ve been really inspired by collections lately. i think it’s been my way to justify some of our clutter… that maybe if i can turn it into a “collection” than i can keep it :) right now i’m building our collection of clocks {mostly baby bens} books of course, maps, & i’m hoping to add globes & huge antique jars. this globe collection is perfection.

5th: we’ve all got to have a little inspiration to get fit & stay healthy… how else am i supposed to keep getting to the gym at 4:30 am & adding miles to my que?!

& last but not least a few of my favorite web candies from my bookmarks bar… moredesignplease. fashionologie. net-a-porter. apartment therapy. natural news. etsy. the sartorialist. & sadie olive. enjoy & be curious!

ok pupcakes… see you in a week!

*photos via: pinterest. & more design please.

new favorite: butter LONDON

i found out through the grapevine that “butter” was coming to Nordstrom for our annual Anniversary Sale but had never heard of it before. it was the buzz of the cosmetics department…and being a nail polish junkie, i was excited to find out more. i immediately checked out their website and what to my wandering eyes should appear?!?! NON-TOXIC nail polish! really?! could this be true… could someone like me who loves natural health finally have a way to give up the horrid smelling and “i know it’s probably not good for me, but i just can’t stop using it” normal nailpolishes?! it’s true indeed.

the brand is called butter LONDON… they are quickly becoming famous for their high fashion “3 FREE” nail lacquers. their products are formulated without the use of harmful ingredients like formaldehyde, toluene and DBP or parabens. so, not only are they non-toxic but they offer amazing colors, base & top coats, cuticle & nail growth treatments as well as acetone free polish remover that smells AMAZING!!! (i was blown away when i used it… it smells like flowers and fresh powder!) i ended up buying 3 bottles and i’ve tried all 3 colors in a week! i’m loving it! they cover well, the colors are dense, it’s lasting long and seems to be pretty chip free!

i LOVE the london, england inspired titles the colors all have too. meet mine!

yummy mummy... muggins... artful doger...

you can order from nordstrom here. you can order from butterLONDON here. also be sure to follow them on twitter @butterLONDON to see what they’re up to… enjoy and be curious!

the power of honey…

so… if you know me or hang out with me already, you know i’m a big natural health guru… i am all about doing your own research, then making your own decisions in faith on what you should do. i try not to overwhelm people with my “interesting facts” or random thoughts on things like dairy, chiropractic care, vaccinations, natural birth, raw vitamins, dryer sheets, the government or how your body is God’s temple and you need to treat it right! ok, ok, i by NO means know everything, or have any type of medical degree but i like to learn and i like to try to be healthy.

i thought i’d let my first health and wellness blog post be about something fun like bees. well, it’s really about local raw honey and the benefits it has that you probably didn’t even know about… there are lots of “superfoods” out there to boost your immune system, but few are as potent as bee pollen.

did you know:

  • that raw honey can actually fight off bacteria and parasites. it contains natural antibiotics that can help kill them directly. applying honey topically to a wound can not only speed up the healing process with it’s plethera of vitamins, minerals and enzymes but can heal the tissue while preventing infection. bacteria simply cannot live, so the infection reverses itself. {you can even read about the results of cesarean patients using honey after surgery here.}
  • that 1 out of every 5 people suffer from insomnia. we’ve all heard of people like michael jackson who allegedly died post a crazy concoction of sleeping medications. people are so desperate to fall asleep that the un-natural drugs they cram into their fragile bodies doesn’t allow them to wake back up. raw honey promotes healthy sleep. just 2 teaspoons in a cup of water, chamomile tea or warm almond milk will help knock you out, in a good way.
  • you can condition your HAIR! mix honey with an equal amount of olive oil, lather the mix through your hair, then wrap your head up in a warm towel for about 30 minutes… then shampoo out. i’ve heard your hair has never looked or felt better! {haven’t tried it yet, but i will soon!}
  • it can help with poor digestion… mix honey with an equal amount of apple cider vinegar and dilute to taste with a little h2o. it won’t only help your tummy but is great for the joints and even helps promote weight loss. {love it!}
  • mixed with an equal amount of oatmeal it works as a great face masque. leave it on for 30 minutes, then wash it off… it’s an amazing deep cleanser and will help reduce acne and unwanted blemishes.
  • it cools, removes pain and aids in fast healing when applied directly to burns. it not only keeps bacteria from growing but it also prevents scarring. {you can beat this stuff with a stick.}
  • it can help with your allergies! {mine are TERRIBLE and always have been…} i’ve learned that local raw honey can sensitize you to the pollen in your area, and helps as a natural remedy. a spoonful a day is what my mum says to do… over a bowl of fruit, oatmeal, or in your tea, just get it into your system on a daily basis and it should help…

here are a few other articles you can check out thanks to a favorite website of mine… natural news.com: immune system. allergies. healing powers. honey health. keep in mind that raw honey means it hasn’t been pasteurized or filtered and comes directly from the bee hive. local means it’s from your specific area… we’ve got some straight from bee farmers here in Charlotte, NC and we LOVE it! check the local natural health food stores, farmers markets or online for the good stuff, but not your regular supermarket. the lists of benefits could go on and on, so be sure to check out some of the listed articles for more info. be curious! hg
